Association of Licensed Architects
Accessibility
Published October 10, 2026.
Our commitment
The Association of Licensed Architects wants every architect, student and member of the public to be able to use this website and the ALA member system. That includes people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, people who use a screen reader, people who zoom the page or enlarge text, and people who are sensitive to motion.
The standard we work to
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. It applies to licensedarchitect.org and to members.licensedarchitect.org, where members sign in, renew, register for events and track continuing education.
What we have done
- Every page has one main heading, a skip link, labelled navigation and a page language.
- Images that carry meaning have a text alternative. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Both sites work with a keyboard. Menus open and close from the keyboard, and the Escape key closes them.
- Pages reflow to a single column on a phone and when zoomed. Wide tables scroll inside their own frame.
- Text can be enlarged to 200 percent. The member system also has a larger text setting and a dark theme.
- Signing in needs no password and no puzzle. We email a six digit code that you can paste in, and the same email has a link that signs you in.
- The member system warns you two minutes before it signs you out for inactivity. Any key press, click or tap keeps you signed in.
- Motion is limited to short transitions.
- We test with automated tools in the Chrome, Firefox and Safari engines, and by hand with a keyboard.
Known gaps
We reviewed both sites in October 2026 and fixed what we found. These items are still open.
- We have not yet finished testing with screen reader software on a phone and on a desktop.
- Contract documents are sold as Microsoft Word files. We have not yet checked each file for accessibility. If you need a contract in another format, ask us.
- Past issues of Licensed Architect magazine are PDF files that may not read well in a screen reader.
Things outside our control
Card payments are taken on a page run by Stripe. Links to state licensing boards, NCARB, webinar platforms and social media lead to other organizations' websites. We cannot fix those sites, and we will help you complete any task with ALA another way if one of them is a barrier.
Tell us about a problem
If something on either site is hard to use, or you need information in another format, contact ALA.
- Email: ALA@licensedarchitect.org
- Phone: 847-382-0630
Tell us the page address and what you were trying to do. If the website is a barrier, we will help you join, renew, register for an event or order a contract by phone or email.
About this statement
This statement is based on a review of every page of both sites against WCAG 2.2 Level AA in October 2026. We review it once a year and after any major change to either site.
